The great guru encouraged his various students to adhere to the good traditional discipline of their own faith. Stressing the all-inclusive nature of Kriya as a practical technique of liberation, Lahiri Mahasaya then gave his chelas liberty to express their lives in conformance with environment and up bringing.

“A Moslem should perform his namaj worship four times daily,” the master pointed out. “Four times daily a Hindu should sit in meditation. A Christian should go down on his knees four times daily, praying to God and then reading the Bible.”

With wise discernment the guru guided his followers into the paths of Bhakti (devotion), Karma (action), Jnana (wisdom), or Raja (royal or complete) Yogas, according to each man’s natural tendencies. The master, who was slow to give his permission to devotees wishing to enter the formal path of monkhood, always cautioned them to first reflect well on the austerities of the monastic life.

The great guru taught his disciples to avoid theoretical discussion of the scriptures. “He only is wise who devotes himself to realizing, not reading only, the ancient revelations,” he said. “Solve all your problems through meditation. Exchange unprofitable religious speculations for actual God-contact. Clear your mind of dogmatic theological debris; let in the fresh, healing waters of direct perception. Attune yourself to the active inner Guidance; the Divine Voice has the answer to every dilemma of life. Though man’s ingenuity for getting himself into trouble appears to be endless, the Infinite Succor is no less resourceful.”

मैंने सुना है, सूफियों में एक कहानी है कि एक पहाड़ के पास एक झील है और उस झील के पास जब भी कोई साधक पहुंच जाता है और आग्रह करता है झील से, और आग्रह अगर वस्तुतः प्रामाणिक होता है, तो झील से उत्तर मिलते हैं।

एक फकीर वर्षों की तलाश के बाद अंततः उस झील के पास पहुंच गया और उसने चिल्ला कर जोर से पूछा कि मेरा एक ही सवाल है: जीवन क्या है? झील चुप रही। लेकिन वह पूछता ही गया। कहते हैं तीन दिन अहर्निश, रात और दिन उसने एक कर डाले। एक ही सवाल कि जीवन क्या है? आखिर झील के देवता को भी झुकना पड़ा। और उसने कहा कि तेरी निष्ठा पूरी है। तू कोई साधारण कुतूहल से नहीं आया। तू साधारण जिज्ञासु भी नहीं है, तू मुमुक्षु है; इसलिए तेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर हम देते हैं: जीवन एक वीणा है।

उस आदमी ने कहा, और पहेलियां अब नहीं चाहता। सीधा-सीधा उत्तर दो। मैं कोई संगीतज्ञ नहीं हूं। वीणा मैंने अपने जीवन में अभी तक देखी भी नहीं। सुना है नाम; लेकिन मुझे जीवन का भी पता नहीं, वीणा का भी पता नहीं। अब यह एक और उलझन हो गई। अभी मैं जीवन को हल करता रहा, अब वीणा का भी पता लगाऊं! तुम मुझे सीधा-सीधा ही कह दो।

झील ने कहा, उत्तर दे दिया गया है।

तो उस आदमी ने कहा, थोड़े संकेत दो जिससे कि मैं रास्ता खोजूं।

तो झील से उत्तर आया कि तू गांव में जा और पहली तीन दुकानों पर गौर से देख, और जो भी तू पाए, लौट कर उत्तर दे।

वह आदमी गया। उसने पहली दुकान पर देखा, वहां कुछ भी न था, लोहे-लंकड़ की दुकान थी, धातुओं के अलग-अलग तरह के रूप-रंग के ढेर लगे थे। वह कुछ समझा नहीं कि जीवन से इसका क्या लेना-देना! दूसरी दुकान पर गया। वह एक तारों की दुकान थी। वहां भी उसको समझ में नहीं आया कि जीवन से तारों का क्या लेना-देना? तीसरी दुकान एक बढ़ई की दुकान थी।

वह बड़ा नाखुश लौटा। उसने सोचा कि इससे तो हम पहले ही बेहतर थे। इस झील से पूछने के पहले ही बेहतर थे। कम से कम इस तरह की मूढ़ता तो दिमाग में न थी। इससे जीवन का क्या लेना-देना? यह तो ज्ञान न मिला और अज्ञानी हो गए। लौट कर नाराज आया और उसने झील से कहा कि यह-यह मैंने देखा। पर इससे जीवन का क्या संबंध है?

झील ने पुनः कहा कि जीवन एक वीणा है। अब तू इस सूत्र को पकड़ ले और इसकी खोज कर।

वर्षों बीत गए। वह आदमी करीब-करीब भूल ही गया वह खोज...जीवन का वीणा होना। एक दिन अचानक एक बगीचे के पास से गुजरते वक्त उसने किसी को वीणा बजाते सुना। वह स्वरलहरी उसे खींच ली। वह खिंचा हुआ जादू के वश बगीचे के भीतर पहुंच गया।

कोई कलाकार वीणा बजा रहा था। साधक को पहली दफा दिखाई पड़ा कि वही तार हैं जो दुकान पर पड़े थे। वही धातुएं हैं जो दुकान पर पड़ी थीं, वीणा में लग गईं। और उस बढ़ई ने भी काम किया है। लकड़ी का भी इंतजाम है।

आज उसे सूत्र साफ हुआ। आज उसे साफ हुआ कि जीवन एक वीणा है। लकड़ी भी है, तार भी हैं, धातुएं भी हैं; अलग-अलग पड़े हैं। कोई संगीत पैदा नहीं होता। तीनों जुड़ जाएं, एक ढंग में बैठ जाएं, तालमेल आ जाए, तो संगीत उठ सकता है। इतना अदभुत संगीत उठ सकता है--निराकार! इतना प्राणों को मोहित कर लेने वाला संगीत उठ सकता है! ऐसी जादू भरी रहस्यपूर्ण घटना घट सकती है!

मैं भी तुमसे यही कहता हूं : जीवन एक वीणा है।

लेकिन तुम्हें अपनी वीणा जमानी है। दूसरों की नकल मत करना। उन्हें अपनी वीणा जमानी है। वीणाएं बहुत तरह की हैं। और हरेक व्यक्ति के पास अपने तरह की वीणा है और अपने ही तरह का छिपा हुआ संगीत है।
